The Royal Oak

Cromhall's Royal Oak Pub is the village's best place to meet and chat over a drink or a relaxing meal.

A warm welcome awaits you from Steve and Helen Dann.

Have a drink...

Steve and Helen have stocked the bar with a choice of lagers and real ales, including Stella, Fosters and John Smith.

You can also enjoy three ciders on the pump: Black Rat, Natch and Thatchers, and many different wines.

Tuck in...

Food is a big priority at the Royal Oak, with chef Paul supported by a chef from a top hotel.

Over 80% of all food served is made on the premises and sourced locally.

Meat comes from the award-winning Perry's of Alveston and Tortworth Estate Farm Shop.

The Royal Oak is also happy to cater for functions and buffets on request.

One happy customer sent us this comment: "Just to say we had a fantastic Sunday dinner at the Oak yesterday - good homemade cooking! I know the interior has changed but change is good! I will be going back again for the Sunday dinner!

A sense of history

The Royal Oak has modern facilities, but the attractive timbered building is listed, and dates from 1674.

There were inns on the site from much earlier than that - there's a Jacobean fireplace and the fresh spring well is thought to be mediaeval.

A diver went down to explore the well in 1999, but the dive wasn't a success - he hit a grille and modern debris just 15 feet down, so the well is keeping its secrets for now.

Steve and Helen have re-hung a selection of old photos and maps of Cromhall in the dining area, many of which have been donated by villagers over the decades.

Steve is currently tracking down a certificate, which could prove that the pub dates from 1396.

There are plenty of ghostly-goings on at the Royal Oak - just ask Steve for all the gory details.

Let us drive you home...

Our chef used to be a professional musician, with a Number One song in the Charts for 11 weeks.

Now and again he can be persuaded to pick up a guitar and entertain you with music from the 60s.

Watch this space for a reunion with his brother and former touring partner.

The darts team has been established for several years, and meets on a Monday night.

There is a practice board and a match board, and the team is looking for new players.
