A sense of history

The Royal Oak has modern facilities, but the attractive timbered building is listed, and dates from 1674.

There were inns on the site from much earlier than that - there's a Jacobean fireplace and the fresh spring well is thought to be medieval.

A diver went down to explore the well in 1999, but the dive wasn't a success - he hit a grille and modern debris just 15 feet down, so the well is keeping its secrets for now.
