Tortworth Estate Farm Shop

Whether you're keen to support local suppliers and reduce food miles, crave more flavour and variety on your plate, or simply want a great range of delicious food on your doorstep, Tortworth Estate Farm shop is your answer.

The shop opened in 2003 and is managed by Simon Ball, with his brother Martin as butcher, in conjunction with Stephen and Wendy Ball from New House Farm.

They have a huge variety of produce to choose from, including estate-reared prize-winning aged beef, succulent local lamb, free-range pork and poultry, local honey and eggs, Hobbs House bread, vegetables, cheeses, fruit juices, potatoes, vegetable and apple chips, as well as home-made pies, savouries and cakes.

There's also a great selection of cards and gifts, including hand-made chocolates and soaps.

The shop now has over 100 suppliers, and vegetables are either home grown or come from within the county of Gloucestershire, when in season. All five local cheese producers are represented, as well as four local apple juice makers.

Simon is always looking for more local suppliers, both for food and non-food items. If you'd like to find out more, call him on 01454 261633.

Bread baked daily

Fresh bread is baked daily on site. The dough is sourced from small bakeries from all over the country and is cooked at the Tortworth Estate shop. There are various flavours to try, including Italian.

We now stock a range of fantastic coffees from Fresh Coffee based in Olveston. Melissa the owner and her husband have carefully selected the best coffees from around the globe, visiting many of the plantations to meet the farmers and workers.

There are beans and ground coffees, Fairtrade coffees and also a range of the finest teas which have all been specially selected for the shop. You will be impressed!

We have two new ranges which complement each other:

No 1; If you are a garlic fan (and you need to be!) we have a wide range of garlic products from the Garlic Farm based on the Isle of Wight, which is renowned for its garlic fields, from smoked garlic bulbs for the keen cook, pickled garlic in red wine, a wide selection of pickles and salsas to some very tasty garlic butter - ideal for knocking up a quick bit of fresh garlic bread.

No 2; Similarly if you're even more daring we also have a range of chilli products from the South Devon Chilli Farm which includes chilli sauce, hot chilli sauce, hotter chilli sauce etc... and also plain or orange chilli chocolate. Go steady but Yum!!!

Latest news from Simon

We supply two local restaurants with meat from the butchery and these are the Orangery at the Tortworth Court, Four Pillars Hotel and the Pepper Pot down through Damery. I can highly recommend both of the restaurants as a special treat and chefs Greg (The Orangery) and Mark (The Pepperpot) will surely make your night with carefully balanced menus using local ingredients and a very personal and warming service.

We are employing a Market gardener this year to get the optimum output from our vegetable patch. I am going to be pushing seasonal sales and giving you information on the seasons and recipe ideas to go with it. I hope you will all get on board with this. I feel as a farm shop owner and of course farmer's son that I have a responsibility to get people buying their produce within the seasons when it is at its very best.

With a few helpful cooking suggestions for the more uknown fruit, vegetables and meats and some useful preserving tips you will be able to buy produce at its best flavours and prices and make it last a lot longer. I will be clearly labelling the seasons and varieties, benefits, cooking ideas and useful tips for preserving alongside each product.

We are having a change around in the shop and it will be for the better. We are not taking on loads of new products; if anything we are reducing the lines and concentrating our efforts on what we do best, which I feel is the meat and supporting local producers. I will display more information about the suppliers and try to get across that a huge proportion of what we sell comes from within the local area, detailing more information on where things are made, by whom and how.

We have started selling homemade soup and baguettes at lunchtimes between 11.30am and 2.30pm Monday till Friday. Simon
